Book Blitz: Always Complicated by Julia Kent

It’s Always Complicated
Julia Kent
Publication date: April 27th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary
Take two men, one woman, three children. Stir in one best friend and her fiancé doctor. Whisk one best friend’s niece, her two rock star boyfriends, and add a grizzled old octogenarian diner owner with a naughty mouth and her eighty-something boyfriend who loves every minute of her.
Put them all in a campground in northern Maine where the owners’ daughter has two special men of her own. Bake for 400 pages.
It’s Always Complicated is the sprawling saga of how Laura, Mike and Dylan (Her Billionaires) and Josie and Alex (It’s Complicated) have the wedding of a lifetime at Escape Shores Campground (the Obedient series) while Darla, Trevor and Joe (the Random series) make an appearance with a cast of characters that includes cameos from the Warlock Waitress and maybe…just maybe…Mavis the Chicken.
This book combines three of Julia Kent’s series in a madcap spectacle that yields one universal truth: love is a journey and not a destination, but people will drive you crazy along the way.
Enjoy the ride.

Read the series in order:

Her Billionaires (New York Times bestseller)

It’s Always Complicated

EXCERPT:

A small crowd of men wearing gun holsters ran past Josie and Alex, followed by three uniformed TSA agents.
“I wonder what that’s about?” Alex marveled, his eyes tracking the fracas. He and Josie had come to the Portland, Maine airport to pick up her mother, Marlene, and Aunt Cathy, Uncle Mike and her new Uncle Calvin. All the Ohio relatives were here for her and Alex’s wedding.
A cold wave of dread washed over her. They were running toward the baggage claim for the airline her entire family was on.
“I’ll bet it’s my mother,” she groaned, leaning against him for support. His strong arm wrapped around her shoulders and gave her the comfort she needed. Too bad he couldn’t give her a second backbone made of steel.
If he could, she knew, he would. The thought made her smile.
“I’m sure it’s nothing,” he said, giving her a squeeze. She looked up at him. Way up, given the enormous height difference between the two of them. His warm, brown eyes met hers and for an instant, she wondered if he might be right. That eternally positive outlook he had was a bit infectious.

Maybe she needed to stop assuming the worst of every situation.
A rotund security guard huffed and puffed, running past them, holding what looked like a spare uniform. He was talking into a walkie-talkie.
“Naked?” Huff huff. “She’s naked? What size?” Huff huff.
Alex’s kind eyes filled with alarm. It was both charming and horrifying. Josie couldn’t quite decide which impression she enjoyed more. There was a kind of schadenfreude in realizing she was right. His idealism was sweet, but sometimes she needed him to be more of a realist.
And Marlene served up an entire buffet of realism.
“Mile High Club again?” the guard asked, pausing to catch his breath. Josie watched him with a morbid fascination.
“You don’t really think it’s your mom in there, Josie,” Alex said. He caressed her shoulder absent-mindedly, watching the guard. “I mean—”
“Two men in one bathroom with a naked woman?” the guard barked into his walkie-talkie, eyebrows hitting the brim of his hat.
Josie snorted, the sense of dread spreading.
“How could it be anyone else?”
“That sounds more like something Darla would do,” Alex said. “You sure she’s still in Boston and not on this flight?”
Just as Josie was about to reply, the commotion got louder.
“MARLENE!” Josie heard the sense of outrage in her Aunt Cathy’s voice. The airport was small, but not that small. Cathy’s voice could carry. “WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR CLOTHES?”

EXCERPT:

Without looking away, I grab the cereal and milk and pour them into my bowl. She takes another bite of her cereal, never taking her eyes off mine as I put the spoon in and taste it.
And then we sit and eat … and stare.
“Okay …” Winston says, and he grabs a newspaper and sits down on a stool in the kitchen and blocks us out while reading.
I don’t care. I’m not talking and neither is she. I’m not going to give her any more excuses to make a run for it, and she’s not telling me what she really thought when she saw me, so …
SMACK!
Something’s stuck to my face.
Sticky … milky … cereal.
And her face. It turns from a full-on frown to full-blown laughter.
She places her hand over her mouth, but it can’t hide her sly smile.
Grinding my teeth, I wipe my face off with a napkin and cock my head at her.
Slowly, I put the spoon back into the bowl, watching her stare as I bring it up to my face.
And then I quickly turn it around and catapult it at her.
It smashes right into her forehead.
I grin as it drips off her, and the smile is wiped off her face immediately.
“Motherfucker,” she growls, and she grabs another spoonful. “Oh, it’s on.”
Suddenly, we’re in an all-out war.
Cereal and milk flies everywhere. Spoons too.
“Hey! Watch it! I just bought new China,” Winston says, putting down his newspaper.
“Eat shit!” Alexis yells, throwing her entire bowl at my face.
I only barely manage to catch the bowl, without its contents … which are now splashed over my chest and the floor.
“Oh, now you’ve done it,” I growl, and I pick up my bowl, stand up, walk toward her … and throw it over the top of her head.
She squeals as the cold milk runs over her body, which only a thin nightgown covers. Her instantly hardening nipples catch my attention. They’re hard to miss, and I swallow back the emerging lust.
“Fuck. You’ll pay for that.”
Her fingers are on my chest before I know it, twisting my nipples.
“Ow! Fuck,” I scream, grabbing her wrists. “No, bad Lexi.”
“Woof,” she says, laughing.
I shake my head, laughing too.
I’m fucking angry she threw her food at me, but it was fucking fun too. I can’t decide which one is more important to feel right now.
But when I look into her eyes, everything ceases to matter.

EXCERPT:

“Fuck, we’re outside,” I groan, tearing away from him.

But he grabs my face and says, “So?” And then he kisses me again.

“Damn you,” I growl. “Making me horny and shit.”

He lets out a low, rumbling laugh that vibrates through my body. “Good thing I’m not gonna stop touching you then.”

“Wha—”

“You heard me,” he interrupts, kissing me full on the lips so I can’t protest.

His fingers find their way to my panties, snaking underneath until he’s right on top of my pussy. I moan into his mouth as he starts toying with me. Wetness spreads across my folds from his slick movements. He knows just what buttons to push to get me off, and I love it.

“Already wet?” he murmurs against my mouth. “Just the way I like it.”

“Oh, fuck me,” I whisper as he flicks my clit.

“Oh, I will, believe me,” he says, with a mischievous smile on his face.

“But—”

“But what? I’m gonna fuck you. That ain’t a question, Lexi. It’s a promise.”

Jesus Christ, his words have me so hot and bothered that I actually let out a small mewl. “But should we?”

“Fuck yes, we should. I don’t give a crap what anyone else tells me, or what I should or shouldn’t do. I’m doing what I want, and what I want is to do you. Now, spread your legs.”

I don’t even get the time to respond because he immediately nudges my legs apart and makes me feel like begging with his fingers. He’s winding me up until I can’t even breathe normally, his eyes always on me, taking pleasure in my pleasure. It’s like we’re both addicted to the drug called us.

We’re dangerous, two people combusting into something more than just lust, realizing it could mean our end. But it doesn’t matter because we’re living in the moment, fucking like there’s no tomorrow.

Because there might not be, and we gotta enjoy it while it lasts.

So I close my eyes and let him take what he wants without regrets.

Not the Hot Chick (Book 1 in the Not the Hot Chick series) Blurb:

Can she be the hot chick for just one night?

No one would call curvy Layla Messner hot. Sweet and smart, yes, but not hot. She doesn’t stand a chance with Cam, the sexy bartender with the teasing grin—especially since her neighbor Jessi has him dead in her sights. Jessi, who is every man’s centerfold fantasy. All Layla has to look forward to is another night with her trusty vibrator.

But when his hook up with Jessi tanks, Cam looks to Layla. He wants her. Here’s her chance to take what she wants and finally be the object of desire—the Hot Chick. If she says no, she may regret it forever. If she says yes, one night may not be enough.

Please note this is a serialized romance. Not the Hot Chick is Book 1 in the series.

EXCERPT FROM BOOK 1:

Jessi Wallace eyed the cute bartender’s butt the way a hungry cat might eye an unsuspecting bird. She actually licked her lips. “I am so going to do him.”

Layla Messner held back a sigh, took another sip of her lemon-drop martini, and asked herself for the sixth time that night, Why am I here, again?

She should have known better than to accept Jessi’s invitation to go out tonight. They weren’t really friends, just across-the-hall neighbors in the same apartment complex that housed many of the Buff State students here in Buffalo, New York. She and Jessi would nod and smile when they passed each other, occasionally stop and chat, but they’d never partied together. So it had been quite the surprise when Jessi tapped on her door two hours ago with a smile and an invitation: “Feel like cutting loose tonight?”

Silly Layla, thinking Jessi was trying to be friendly. More likely, she just wanted a wingman—or wingwoman in this case—and had no one else to step out with.

Jessi leaned over the bar provocatively in her low-cut top, calling to the bartender and pointing to her empty glass. “Can I have another down here?”

Oh, God, she was actually batting her eyelashes. And the way she was leaning to flash her cleavage, it was a wonder her boobs didn’t fall right out onto the bar.

Layla glanced down at her own chest, pulling back her shoulders. Her boobs weren’t so bad, even if they weren’t shown off as blatantly as Jessi’s. Layla knew she had nothing to be ashamed of in that department. If anything, she’d been generously blessed.

The problem was, she was a little too blessed in other areas as well. “Curvy” would be a kind description. “Chubby” might be more to the point.

Jessi, on the other hand, had a body that was every guy’s wet dream. She had big breasts and a tiny little waist that curved out to a rounded pair of hips. The tight, short skirt she wore had every guy in the room craning his neck for a second look at her ass.

The place was pretty quiet for a Friday night. But then again, it was the weekend before spring break, and much of the college-age crowd that usually frequented the Shamrock had already left town. Layla had a four-hour drive to get to her parents’ house and was wiped from spending the day with a class of hyper first graders. Morning would be soon enough to make the trip home.

The bartender ambled down their way and gave them both a smile. “Ready for another, ladies?”

Layla’s heart warmed at the way he included her in the offer. He didn’t just ignore her, the way some guys did, to focus on her prettier companion.

Jessi smirked and tapped the rim of her glass. “I’d like another Hard Fast Screw please.” She practically purred the order for the Shamrock’s variation of a screwdriver.

“You got it.” He directed his gaze at Layla, and her heart gave a little flip. It was too dark in the bar to tell what color his eyes were, but she knew they were beautiful. Just like the rest of him. Dark hair, a buff body, and a gorgeous face. High cheekbones, a straight nose, chiseled lips. Those lips moved, but Layla was too mesmerized by his looks to pay any attention to what he was saying.

She blinked. “Uh, excuse me?”

“He asked if you want another drink.” Jessi’s cutesy moves were forgotten as she gave Layla the death stare. Don’t poach on my territory.

As if. Still, a girl could dream, couldn’t she?

Is the door locked-

Excerpt Not the Stand In (Book 2 in the series):

Since Cam had to work in a few hours, they decided to go to the Shamrock. Because it was still early on a week night, they had no trouble finding a table. "What would you like?" he asked as Layla took her seat.
Just as she was about to ask for a beer, she remembered her plan to seduce him. What had Jessi ordered the night they came here? Oh, right. "I'd like a Hard Fast Screw." Layla looked him straight in the eye and hoped she wasn't blushing as she ordered the bar's version of a screwdriver.
A light glinted in his hazel eyes and he pressed his lips together as though trying not to smile. "Coming right up."
Layla let go a sigh as he headed to the bar for their drinks. Channeling Jessi seemed to do the trick. Tonight, Layla decided, her mantra would be WWJD: What Would Jessi Do?
Cam returned to the table with her cocktail and his bottle of beer. "Cheers." He clinked the mouth of his bottle to the rim of her glass and they both drank. The tangy juice slid easily down Layla's throat. She couldn't taste the vodka but felt its kick as it landed in her stomach. Warmth pooled in her middle and spiraled through her.
She admired him as she sipped her drink. The separate parts of his face—his square jaw, his strong chin with a hint of a cleft, his straight nose—all came together beautifully. Add to that his dark, wavy hair and a pair of greenish-brown eyes flecked with gold and he was a perfect work of art. And when he smiled… God. It was enough to make any girl drop her panties.
Fear fluttered through her. Was she crazy, thinking she could get with him a second time? He had his pick of women. Just looking around the bar, Layla spotted two or three cute, hot girls who were much more his type than she was. She felt a sudden urge to slug back the rest of her drink and bounce before she made a complete idiot of herself.
No, you're not going to run. You have to try. The worst he can do is say no.

Excerpt Not the Friend with Benefits (Book 3 in the series):

They sipped their cocoa in companionable silence. Layla tried not to let her thoughts dwell on Paige, whoever she was. To distract herself, she gestured toward the skaters young and old gliding by on the ice. "They make it look so easy."
"Lots of things look easy. Let me ask you a question. When a kid comes to you whining that the assignment is too hard or they can't figure out their homework, do you tell him, ‘Oh, that's okay, Jimmy. If it's too hard, don't bother. Just forget the homework.'"
She gave him a withering look. "Don't be silly. Of course not."
"Right. You work with him. Ask him what he doesn't understand. Go over it with him until you're sure he gets it. You don't let him give up."
She held back a sigh. "I have a feeling you're working up to something."
"Yeah, I am. Following your example, I'd be a pretty lousy teacher if I let you give up."
"I'm not giving up." Being compared to a whiny schoolkid wasn't a compliment. "And I don't whine."
He stared out at the ice rink. "Okay." He took a sip, swallowed, then began to murmur in a high, crybaby voice, "Wah, my legs feel like spaghetti. I can't lift my feet, I'm gonna fall. Don't go so fast. You're going too fast, you'll make me fall."
She gave him a shot with her elbow. "Teachers are supposed to encourage their students, doofus. Not make fun of them."
He huffed a laugh. "You got me there. Okay, no more teasing. But you gotta promise you'll keep trying."
She smiled. "I promise."
It was so nice, joking around with Cam and hanging out. Just because they'd hooked up in the past didn't mean they couldn't be friends. Though Cam had indicated he'd be just fine adding "benefits" to the mix, Layla had no intention of letting that happen. First of all, Drew was in her life now. Second, Layla knew she couldn't be that casual about sex with Cam. She liked him too much. It wouldn't be hard for her to develop deeper feelings for him.
Not because he was hot, though of course he was. His thick, wavy head of hair made her want to run her fingers through it. His hazel eyes brimmed with mischief, and just a glance from him could send a tingle through her. More than that, he was smart, ambitious, and a genuinely good guy. It would be so easy to fall for him.
And what would Drew say if he knew all that? Maybe he'd want you to stop seeing him. Isn't that why you've kept your friendship on the low? Because you don't want to take that chance?

Excerpt Not the Placeholder (Book 4 in the series):

Cameron Cleary strode into his living room, wearing only a towel wrapped low around his hips. With another towel, he scrubbed his wet hair.
He flashed a grin at Layla, settled on his futon. "I'll be ready to go in a sec."
She grinned right back. "Take your time. I'm in no rush."
Wasn't that the truth. She could happily watch him, with or without clothes, all day long. Her mouth watered at the roll of his shoulders as he dried his hair. His skin glistened, still damp from the shower. A drop of water trickled down his chest. How she'd love to lick it off.
God, she was a ho. Though she'd spent the night at his place, and they'd slept late this morning—which hadn't involved much sleeping—she still couldn't get enough of him.  She might be sore, but it was a good kind of sore. She'd jump at the chance of another go.
Layla felt no shame whatsoever. Yep, a ho for sure.
She nodded at the towel. "Why the sudden modesty?" It wasn't like she hadn't seen everything he had to offer.
His dark eyebrows lifted. "Why, Ms. Messner. Are you suggesting I traipse around butt naked?"
"You bet. You're depriving me of my favorite view."
"Really. Well, then…" He swiveled his hips, fingering the edge of the towel hanging there.
She groaned. "Come on, don't tease."
Imitating a drum roll, he loosened the towel and flashed a hip while keeping the best parts hidden. "Ba bum bum ba bum."
An instant later he flung the towel and it landed in her face. By the time she snatched it off, he had already turned and was headed down the hall.
"Aw, no fair." At least she got to ogle his sexy ass as he ambled toward his bedroom.
As she waited for him to dress, she scrolled through messages on her phone. A knock sounded at the door. "Should I get it?" she called.
"Yeah, would you?"
Layla opened the door to a petite, slim young woman with short, dark hair and a mischievous smile. "Hi. Is Cam here?"
Who was this? Layla knew Cam had no sisters. "Uh, yeah, he's—"
Without waiting for further invitation, the pixie skipped past Layla into the living room. "Hey, Camster, where the hell are you?"
"Paige?" Wearing jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt, he stood in the bedroom doorway. The girl rushed down the hall and leaped at him. He instinctively grabbed her as she threw her arms around his neck and her legs around his hips.
"I can't believe how long it's been!" she cried.
Cam gently hugged the slender young woman in his arms while Layla looked on silently.

Chapter 2: Part II
* * * Symone * * *

Nile hugged me closer. “It’s okay. I will detonate anyone who comes through the door. I have my Sonar grenade on command. Have your laser gun ready, just in case.”
I tensed. “I fear they will stumble across us soon.”
“We just have to hold on a little while longer.”
“Has Kadeem or anyone contacted you through your mind?”
“Not yet.”
After what seemed like hours, but according to Nile’s time band was less than one, he finally said, “Kadeem, Bryan, and Kumar are here searching for us.”
“Hail, Sonar.”
My nerves were fried. Nile had held my fears at bay. He’d whispered about the first encounter of the Surpass and how the eclipse of the five moons caused total nebulas. No wonder he held a degree in astrophysics. I understood the gist of it. The gravitational pull of the phenomenon affected ours planet’s power. How it happened and why the eclipse lasted so long were over my head.
“I just told Kadeem our whereabouts.”
“It’s so great you guys can communicate through your minds.”
Even though it was extremely dim, Kadeem’s teleportation power released a golden radiant glow as they materialized in front of us. There was no time for celebration; the electrical door came off the hinges. Four intruders piled in. Nile launched his grenade. It made a deafening bang. Bryan lit up another Polar that the blast missed with the palm of his hand. Others came to their aid, letting loose rounds of laser beams. Outnumbered, I feared that we weren’t going to make it.

Playing the Game

Since being drafted by the NHL to play for his home team at age nineteen, Derek Backhard has had everything he's ever dreamed of - unrivaled MVP mentions, countless goals and assists, even being compared to the great one. Holding the power to control his future in the palm of his hands, nothing stood in his way.
Until the unthinkable happened, and everything about his life shifted. Past priorities fell away the moment he held baby Ryder in his arms mere moments after losing his close friend, and Ryder's father, Brad.
After weeks of watching Liz fall apart over the loss of her husband as she struggled to adjust to life as a single parent, Derek vows to give her and Ryder everything they deserve, creating a life he never knew he always wanted.
Rocked to her core by her changing feelings for him, Liz doesn’t know what to do with Derek or his offer. Uncertainty swirls within her as she leans on her lifelong friend during the hard times, but how much of his attention is real, and how much is pity?
Is she strong enough to let him in and let him take care of her, or will she force him away and back into the life she thinks he really wants?

Interview:

Special Edition
Can you tell us a little about Playing the Game?
PTG wasn’t supposed to happen at first. *spoiler* I had no plan to write a series until Brad died in book one and as I grieved him, yes I grieved him too as it was also a shock to me that he died. Brad kept talking and talking that he wanted his scene to be written, he wanted his own book but I had to figure out a way to make that happen. Yes the book is about Derek but that is why Brad shadows the book so much.

Playing the Game is actually the second book in The Game series, do readers need to read the first book in order to completely understand and enjoy Playing the Game?

Absolutely you need to read book one. You need to get to know each character first and why they say and do the stuff that they do. Yes in book two they’ve grown, but I still feel it’s very important that you understand the development and bond they all have together.

What can you tell us about the first book, The Game?

The Game was written all in fun. Kirsten is my other half really, I’m very straight-shooting and I don’t give anything away when I make a business deal. I am often told I am a very hard person to read which sometimes comes off that I am a b*tch, just like Kirsten. If I changed professions and went into business, Kirsten is exactly how I want to be. I also have a strong bond with my high school friend twenty years later so it was important to me that Kirsten had that too.

What was the inspiration for Playing the Game?

Easy, I wrote a book about my ultra-ego. LOL

What about hockey and the NFL draws you in?

I’m not sure what draws me to hockey, besides that I’m Canadian and it’s a passion we share. When I watch the games at home, I’m loud. I talked to the players, give the coach my coaching opinions and I yell when stupid moves are made. Yet, when I go to a live game I sit and front of my seat never taking my eyes off the ice and I’m as quiet as a mouse. I really am the most boring person to take to a game. As for the NFL, I don’t watch and when I do, I’m lost because it different rules then the CFL.

Do you have a favorite hockey player or team?

My favorite team is the Oilers, there are my home team (you don’t cheer for another team other than your home team, that is just wrong) and don’t make fun of my team either because what you are going to poke fun at me with, I make the same statements. LOL! I don’t have a favorite player because it’s a team effort, not one play is better than another.

While writing Playing the Game plot and outline? If so did you follow it, or did it go off track and turn out differently than excepted?

I write an outline plot for every book and character, however when I start writing and developing each character they start to take over. I have yet to actually write a book that looks anything like my plot and outline. My books always turn out different when what’s in my head when I start to write.

How much control do your characters have over the outcome of the book? Did they throw any curve balls balls at you in Playing the Game?

Yes, the characters have a lot of control over my work, apparently. I find they all become bossy. Definitely curve balls are thrown in, such as Brad- he was not to die and Derek was to finish out his playing career due to an injury, not by choice.

Describe Derek in five words.
Dominate, Fierce, Loving, Caretaker and HOT

Describe Liz in five words.

Soft, Outgoing, Quiet, Nurturing and Passionate

What was going through Derek’s mind when he first held Liz’s son, Ryder?

I think tons of emotions were running through his head at one time. It’s hard to pin point which one to really focus on, a lot was happening at his point in time of the book.

Do you have a favorite scene/moment in Playing the Game?

Chapter twelve is one of my favorites because it’s real life. My favorite line is “Press Cougar Claudia.” LOL it still makes me laugh.

Do you identify with any of the characters in Playing the Game?
I have Kirsten work ethic but I also am entune to Liz’s nurturing.

Do you plan to write more about any of the characters in Playing the Game? Maybe one of Derek’s team members?
Adam and Caroline’s story is next followed by Logan and Steve’s. So far I have no plan to write another hockey book but if I was, I think Jonesy would get a book.

Do you aim for a certain number of pages or words each day?
No, I’m an erratic writer. With so much going on, on the farm at different times of the year it’s hard to sit and write some days. One day I will write eight pages, the next three days nothing then fifteen pages. My goal is to get two books out a year… maybe three.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I didn’t know I wanted to become an author, it wasn’t my intent at all. I have my schooling to teach special needs children and when I stopped teaching to have my family, writing found me when my youngest started kindergarten full time.

You have a number of books released, do you have a favorite?
Currently I have six books published with hopefully two more on the way this year and two more covers complete after that… with another one being developed in August.

When you’re not writing, what can you be found doing?

Reading, traveling, farming, 4H and of course chilling with my family and friends.

What are you writing now? Anything you can tell us about it?
When I come back from A Weekend With The Authors, in Nashville in May I am going to be starting an MC (motorcycle series) Waking Up In Leather. It’s not going to be your traditional MC book, it will focus more on romance but of course there will be crude things involved.

What is something that you find particularly challenging about writing or being an author in general?
The most challenging for me is to stick to deadlines, I absolutely SUCK at them. The other is reaching out to my readers, I wish there was additional ways to meet more of them, find out their story. I love book signings for this reason I don’t necessarily sell myself, I’d much rather meet the readers.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?
Write for you and no one else! You will not please everyone and nor should you. Write because it’s a passion for you, not for another way to make an income- because it’s that’s the case you will be eating mac and cheese forever.

Do you have any writing rituals? Anything you must have while writing? Coffee? Candy? etc.
Candy, I eat so much candy it’s sickening really and when I edit I binge eat everything.

Who influenced your writing/life the most?
No one influences my writing because I write for me and what I want to read. But I will say this journey all started when I was thirty and I read my first ever book beginning to cover, then the entire series in three days. Thanks to Twilight.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?
I truly can’t thank my readers and bloggers enough. This past year was a nightmare and each and every reader and blogger stuck by me till the bitter end and for that they will always have my gratitude.
